This is the weekend where the saying “like stealing candy from a baby” literally applies as parents eat their kids’ Halloween candy to ensure they are safe for their kids (yes, any old excuse to get bite-sized pieces of candy). Hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. This weekend I’ll be watching the Game of the Century (for this week anyways) when the New England Patriots play the Indy Colts. Until then, some odds and ends to end the week:
-  Who do you buy mutual funds and stocks from? Where does all my money has a good summary of what each type of financial advisor does and what they can sell you.
- Looking for passive income which is real estate based but don’t want to be a landlord? How about investing in 2nd mortgages? Million Dollar Journey gives a general over-view on investing in 2nd mortgages (I link to part 2 only). I have a long comment in part 2 about due diligence concerns and how to get find good 2nd mortgages.
- On a related note, Canadian Capitalist has a summary of exotic investment vehicles and his verdict on them. I have to find the study which indicated most IPO’s go down in price a year after their issue.
- Next week I am writing a post on my 3 best and 3 worse companies for customer service. Feel free to give suggestions. To give you a hint, one of the best has the color green in their logo and there’s a log-jam for the 3 worse right now (there’s too many!)
- Finally, I am looking for a new washer and dryer- readers, please help- what do I look for? Single man buying appliances! This could be ugly without your help.

Hey thanks for the mention. With regards to the wash/dyer shopping, i’m also shopping for the same appliances for the new home. From the research that i’ve done, seems that the front loading ones are the new standard. The only problem with the front loading washers is that they spin so fast that they move around a lot, thus make a lot of noise. Something you may want to keep in mind if you’re planning on putting the washer/dryer on your main floor. Not so much a problem if it’s in a basement.

Thanks for the mention. I’ll be watching the Colts-Pats game as well and cheering for the Colts (I’ve always been a fan, even before their Super Bowl win).

I’m going for the Colts since I hate NE (I’m a Bills fan).
I know a number of people who have had a lot of expensive problems with their front-end loading machines. We’ve had ours about a year and a half without any problem but if they don’t last then I think they will get replaced with the old style machines.

Thanks as well for the mention to a post on my blog. I’m probably heading to Buffalo on the 18th to see the Pats vs Bills game. Not really a football fan to be honest - I just like watching live sports and haven’t been to an NFL game before. I’m one of those masochistic F1 fans, forever hoping there will be on-track passing… lol
