I also consider myself a financial planner who helps guide my clients in all areas of financial importance from tax planning, life and health insurance, estate planning, budgeting, mortgage planning etc. I don't get "paid" for most of the other "advice" I give, call it value added for the compensation I do receive from the mutual fund trailers. I have a masters degree in Biochemistry and did medical research for 20 years before changing careers (not a "failure" at it either). Why you ask? I was a DIY investor and pretty good at it. Bottom line is that financial advisors are commissioned salespeople not professionals and you have to treat their advice with that in mind. When you are getting advice on a computer from a guy at Future Shop you have to know that he will try to upsell you or do whatever he can to make more commission off you.
