		<description>You raise very good points here. When picking dividend paying stocks, be sure to find companies that are consistently growing their dividends year over year, and have been paying them for at least 10 years. Also check the nature of their business; for e.g. businesses in the telecommunications sector tend to have higher yields than others due to the steady cash flows coming from wireless subscribers.

You should also inspect the dividend payout ratio of most companies, and anything in excess of 80% signals trouble ahead &amp; potential dividend cuts.
