I agree, it is easier to get a service based business going than one that sells goods which is why even if you sell goods, you should find some way to consult on the side. A little over a year ago I "bootstrapped" a property management business here in the Midwest. Of course, this is much easier to do for service-based industries, which I strongly suggest for those with passion, but little money. It worked out great as I brought in a partner that I later sold my portion to as I decided to head in a different direction. "Bootstrapping" helped teach me a lot about small business, I might have not found out otherwise. It sharpens you marketing and people skills, as you are constantly in the trenches meeting face to face. I've built up skills and knowledge that will go with me in whatever I decide to do even if that isn't small business in the future. I'm relatively new to your blog, but did really enjoy this article.
